  • programming drum breaks

for the most part, ill just play out my drums on my mpd. all my drum sounds are from my vinyl collection and other breaks but i havent really worked on beats using the full break and wanna try it out. im curious if u guys lay out a break and add sample chops over it, have a non-drum pattern made and try 2 find a break to use with it, or chop up the breaks and play the hits in the same pattern as the breaks. just looking for a place 2 start with this

I usually chop the drum break up into hits and make my drum loop, but THEN I add lower velocity snares or kicks throughout the pattern for a more breakish feel. Its hard to describe. I sometimes do use the loop as I find it, but it's got to be real dope. If I do that though, I'll loop the loop and then also chop parts out to add here and there over the loop. :-)

I do it the same way. If I find a dope break, I generally chop it up + save the full break with bpm to my library.
Usually I start my beats with the melody, so i can easily create a drumframework which supports my chops. But sometimes I try to find a fitting break instead of playing out the drums with single hits. I save the breaks with bpm just for situations like this! Maybe I have to pitch the break a little bit up or down to make it fit, but thats okay for me

I dont pitch the break. I find the BPM of the original break and then timestretch it to my new project tempo, mu hahaha. (evil laugh)

yessir, thats another way for gold if I'm pitching the break, I avoid to pitch the breaks too much, but I like the artefacts which occur, when pitching down. Timestretching creates some dope artefacts too! depends on my feeling which method I choose

Yeah. Most of my break are at a slower BPM than my beats so I would be pitching up and that makes the drums sound too high. Timestretch or drum hit chopping is the better option.
