  • FL Studio Hi Hats technique, 9TH WONDER style

I have one question about 9Th Wonder hi-hats rhythm, I listen the Threat and other productions and the hi-hats seem to be faster than the bpm of music, this results in a beat with more "movement".
I made a beat with the same BPM of Threat and my hi hats seemed to be slower than the 9TH Wonder
Anyone know any techniques to make the hi hats with this rhythm in FL Studio?

    Thanks!

Give me a couple of days and I'll get you set on this question.

were you following the bpm of the sample or timing with snare? The easy answer could have arranged the project and added the hi hats afterwards..and I also know in FL the BPM are usually in whole numbers as opposed to Logic where you might have a bpm at 88.1347353675 and FL might just be 88 bpm.. but who knows though 9th is a beast..met him here in Hawaii during the premiere of his Wonder Years... i got footage of him DJing the after party as well ----> http://youtu.be/su9zzf0b6D4

FL isnt only whole numbers for BPM. It goes to three decimal places. Give me a few, tomorrow I'm going to get you taken care off, hopefully.

Ok, I finally got around to it. I've just been busy. Anyway, it may be the choice of hat that your using or the way that 9th chopped (start and end points) his hats but its a typical, 16th note pattern. This is what the pattern looks like in FL Studio. You need to vary the hats pitch and velocity to get the shuffle/swing on the hats. Also at the top of the pattern, you'll see that I adjusted the swing almost to the end. It makes the pattern a lot less stiff.

Generally I like to slide the hi hat over a pinch to keep it off the other hits. Couple that with slightly changing the velocity/pitch of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th hat makes a nice shuffle sound.

Umm hmm. Always modify the hats for some good shuffling.
