  • Big Joe Turner - "Shake, Rattle and Roll" (BEFORE Bill Haley)

Rhythm and Blues giant, Big Joe Turner was sly, forceful, and cunning. His interpretation of a song was most certainly slanted towards the blues. Here, with "Shake, Rattle and Roll," (a song Bill Haley would later remake to huge success), Big Joe Turner demonstrates Rhythm and Blues at it's best, and shows just how rhythm and blues lead to rock 'n' roll...

Ya its interesting how back in those times the really good music made by black folks was redone by white musicians for marketing reasons and the white musicians would always get the success and credit for redoing a song making it more commercial. I had a history of music production class and we played the original versions and then the commercial white versions and they were always really bad sometimes just plain awful in comparison. This happened a lot with jazz and blues artists. This is a perfect example. Here is the remake by Bill Haley for comparison purposes.

      Great post Brandon!
That's exactly one of the points I wanted to get across not only did I want to show the specific connection between rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll, but I wanted to show how white "cover" versions of rhythm and blues hits took off more commercially.
