  • Showbiz & AG - "Fat Pockets"

Wow. When Showbiz & AG dropped "Fat Pockets" in 1992, I hadn't yet owned an Akai S950! I was still a teenager, I couldn't get into The Fever (Bronx club) yet. Even still, I used to roll up to the Bronx, at least once, EVERY week, just hoping to bump into Show, Fat Joe, AG, ANYBODY FROM DITC or Forest projects and the surrounding area. I used to get my hair cut at this barbershop called Six Corners, on 163rd and Prospect; yep used to take this looongg ass ride on the 2 train... A lot of times, I rolled up their alone, dolow, without anybody. I didn't know it at the time, but the relationships that I made then, would prove EXTREMELY pivotal to me later on.

So it was within this context that I first heard "Fat Pockets." The biggest reason I liked this joint—at the time—was because Showbiz was the personification of what I wanted to do: He rhymed AND made beats! I was always a rhymer first, and I looked up to Showbiz because he demonstrated that you could be dope in both art forms. A couple of years after first hearing "Fat Pockets," I went back and really studied it. That's when it started to become clear: Showbiz was an ill motherfucker on the beats...

Nice post! My favorite joint off of Runaway Slave is "Represent" ft. Big L. The beat and rhymes are crazy! This music video version is different than the version that appears on the album right?

Nawgh. Not different. But... before this joint was released, I had it on cassette tape in 1992. That tape I had was slightly different. And yeah, "Represent" was dope, not my favorite though.

The beat is grinding I love the drums on this track. DITC was doing it back then. they had so many good records and artist out of their camp. I was over at my boys house the other day watchin this documentary called Deep Crates and it cool listenin to showbiz and lord finnesse talk about diggin for breaks. Good documentary I recommend it to anyone who is into sampling.

side note: I wonder how many times I have heard that same stevie wonder reference on a hip hop track.

YES! I was actually thinking the same thing! On the song "Represent" I think it is Big L that is talking about Ray Charles, and i'm pretty sure that that Stevie Wonder references were said a few times in "Fat Pockets". Also, on Finesse's track "Hip 2 da Game" he also references Wonder. DITC must love Stevie Wonder!
